As the countdown to the Paris Olympics begins, cybersecurity emerges as a critical concern akin to the banking and payments sectors. With extensive preparations underway, experts anticipate a surge in sophisticated cyber threats targeting sensitive data, critical infrastructure, and operational continuity.

Steven Baer, VP of Field Sales and Services at cybersecurity leader NetWitness, anticipates a diverse range of cyberattacks during the Games. These threats could include data theft, infrastructure disruption, operational sabotage, financial extortion, and misinformation campaigns. The global stage of the Olympics presents an enticing target for cybercriminals, nation-states, hacktivists, and terrorists alike.

Cisco, a key partner for the Paris 2024 Olympics, predicts a significant increase in cyberattacks compared to previous events. They are collaborating closely with the French Cybersecurity Agency (ANSII), Atos, and Orange to fortify network infrastructure and cybersecurity defenses. This partnership aims to secure communication and entertainment networks that connect venues, teams, volunteers, and spectators.

Competitors like Google Cloud’s Mandiant also highlight potential threats such as website defacements, DDoS attacks, malware targeting operational technology, and disinformation campaigns. These attacks could cause psychological impacts and reputational damage, exploiting the high visibility of the Games.

To combat these threats, organizations involved in the Olympics are implementing state-of-the-art cybersecurity measures. This includes the establishment of advanced cybersecurity operations centers (SOCs) equipped with AI and machine learning tools. These SOCs will monitor and respond to threats in real-time across more than 500 sites, ensuring resilience against cyber threats.

Additionally, ethical hackers are conducting rigorous testing to identify and patch vulnerabilities before malicious actors can exploit them. Companies like Cisco and Eviden are deploying AI-based threat detection systems to differentiate between minor disturbances and potential catastrophic events.

AI technologies, such as Blackbird.AI’s Constellation platform, play a crucial role in detecting and mitigating disinformation across various platforms, including social media, news outlets, and the dark web. These AI systems enhance fraud detection capabilities and provide real-time intelligence to counter narrative manipulation.

Despite preparations, challenges persist, as highlighted by Viginum’s report on a suspected disinformation campaign by Azerbaijani state-affiliated threat actors. This underscores the ongoing need for vigilance and collaboration with social media platforms to combat false information effectively.

As the Games approach, cybersecurity remains a top priority to safeguard participants, spectators, and stakeholders alike. Isogent continues to innovate and collaborate with industry leaders to ensure a secure and successful Paris 2024 Olympics, leveraging cutting-edge IT, cloud, AI, and cybersecurity solutions.
